If this is your first since '68 I would advise that you not take anything you could do bodily harm to yourself with.

I felt like doing the Archie Bunker suicide pantomime act when I saw them at the JPJ not long ago.

Looooowered Expectaaaaations.

Hey, DJ, this is TOOTMO (well, Judge TOOTMO since I sent out that call for you.) Thanks for responding.

Wish I could remember the exact reason I called you forth but I can't (though, I am sure it was important.) I think in the spring of 2011 I was reading McNally's "Long, Strange Trip" and it must have sent me to the Avalon shows.

What are some of the other shows that you saw? You may be a rare specimen of GoGdius Sprectrumus Maximus: not many early heads are still going to shows 44 years later!

Hope you stick around.
Judge TOOTMO

Hi Tootmo,
What a (wonderfully)strange trip this has been. May 2011 I was getting ready to go to see Furthur at Shoreline in Mountain View, with my son and his girlfriend. I,for some reason, entered my user name from my Playstation account into the Google browser. It took me to the Oct 12,1968 show and I was flabbergasted!
I am now preparing to see Further at shoreline with my son and his girlfriend again(Sept 30,2012) and revisited this site.
Glad I did.
That was maybe the best I saw the GD. I wish Pig was there.
When I did see Pig he was looking pretty frail. I thought it was speed, not alcohol.
The worst I saw them(they did even play)was at Altamont Speedway in Dec,'69. That was the worst place to trip.
I had a major Freak Out. It ended my acid days for many a year!(people were melting like candles)Freaky!
Peace-out my friend,and best regards,
DJ(GDAvalon1968)

Your old review seems to be deleted. What do you remember about the show?

It did seem to disappear.
I said it was my first GD show. I was 16yo. and had some LSD in me.
I can't remember if it was Fri. or Sat.
I know the show I was at,the first song was Morning Dew. It's welded into my mind. There was one row of people in front of me. Jerry was 6 to 10 ft away. The peaceful expression on his face was very soothing.
As they got ready to start playing,Jerry said "Pig won't be here tonight. He's at the hospital with his ol'lady. She's real sick."
The show was wonderful. They only had there first record out so I that was my first,Eleven,Dark Star,St Steven etc.
As I re-cal this was the second set. The show was much longer.
Peace,
GDAvalon1968

Oh yes, I remember that review. It was actually quite informative - you're the one person who's remembered Jerry telling the audience Pigpen wouldn't be there.

For all these years we've thought Pigpen wasn't at these shows because he was fired. But finally I was able to put two & two together & figure out that he was really just at the hospital with his girlfriend Veronica, who'd had a stroke.

It's quite possible there's earlier songs missing that aren't on tape. Or it's possible you were at the Friday 10/11 show, which we don't have on tape.
As I understand it, back then the acts would rotate sets, so it would be Openers, Dead Set I, Openers again, Dead Set II.
All those Avalon sets were pretty short, though - even in '69, most of them are less than an hour. There was apparently a strict time limit there - on 4/6/69 the power's turned off in the Dead's last number and Weir says, "It seems someone is trying to tell us something." (They'd gone overboard the night before with an almost 90-minute set.)
